Frequently Asked Questions

It's been a long time since I attended classes. Can I really do this?

Yes, you can! Many of our evening students have been away from the classroom for a number of years. Faculty and staff in the Evening College will advise you, and help you make a successful transition into our community. As a new student, you'll take placement examinations in mathematics and English* (*for students transfering into the university), so that you'll know at which level of course work you should begin in these subjects. All BMA students will be enrolled in Adult Learning Strategies, a course designed specifically to support our adult students. In that first course, you'll learn about the campus community, develop and improve academic skills like writing and critical analysis and implement strategies for study methods and time management to support your work in the classroom.

Will I be eligible for financial aid?

Yes. The Financial Aid office, (843) 863-7050, is your source for information and application forms. The Evening College offices also have forms and basic financial aid information. In fact, I suggest you start with asking someone from this office about financial aid first, (843) 863-7525.

May I attend as a part time student?

Yes. Many of the Evening College students attend on a part time basis. This does impact financial aid. However, the Financial Aid office and Evening College staff will help you understand this.

I completed several courses at another institution. May I transfer those credits?

Charleston Southern University normally accepts course work from regionally accredited colleges and universities, providing you completed the classes with a grade of C or better. An Evening College staff person will review and evaluate all prior coursework and advise you of the number of credits that will apply toward your degree from CSU.

Charleston Southern also allows 13 hours of elective credit for military service. By allowing a trained Evening College staff person to review all of your training and course work, the maximum allowable can be granted as transfer credit. Also, you may be eligible for credit or exemption from certain courses by successfully completing one of the subject tests offered by CLEP or DANTES. The Evening College office will be glad to discuss this with you and give you detailed information if you are interested.
