Databases by Subject

Find journal, magazine, and newspaper articles by searching one or more of the CSU Library's databases and indexes. Some databases include the fulltext of the article, others list only the citation, or the citation plus abstract. Some databases, like Britannica Online or Oxford English Dictionary are electronic resources but do not index journal articles at all.

If you need help choosing a database, select a subject area to see which databases are recommended:

Databases by Title   If you know the database you wish to use, select it from the alphabetical title list.

Journals by Title   If you already have a journal title or citation, either from an outside source or from a database which does not have the fulltext of the article, use the Journals by Title service to find out whether the CSU Library subscribes to the journal in print, microform, or electronic format. Hint: If you are a database which does not have the fulltext of the article you need, open Journals by Title in a new browser window or tab so you can easily switch between the page with the citation and the page which will help you locate the journal

Request an Article   If the CSU Library does not have a journal article you need, you may request a copy through InterLibrary Loan. Or, you may prefer to search the catalogs of other area libraries and visit them to locate materials you need

A general, multi-disciplinary database that contains full text and indexed articles from magazines, newspapers, books and journals

ATLA Religion Database with ATLASerials
Indexes journal articles, book reviews, and collections of essays in all fields of religion and includes full-text from ATLA's online collection of major religion and theology journals. It includes more than 416,000 article citations from more than 1,500 journals (571 currently indexed), more than 210,000 essay citations from over 15,700 multi-author works, and more than 432,000 book review citations.

Biography in Context (Gale)   
Provides contextual information on the world's most influential people. Merges Gale's authoritative reference content (including Lives & Perspectives) with periodicals and multimedia organized into a user-friendly portal experience while also allowing users to search for people based on name, occupation, nationality, ethnicity, birth/death dates and places, or gender as well as keyword and full text.

Book Review Digest Plus (H.W. Wilson on EBSCOhost)
Provides book reviews on a wide range of topics, from a variety of sources, with many of the reviews from serious, academic works. Includes reviews of books for adults, young adults, and children.

Book Review Index Online Plus
A comprehensive online guide to book reviews that includes more than five million review citations from thousands of publications, with linking to more than 630,000 full-text reviews.

Books and Authors   
This readers' advisory resource for fiction and nonfiction provides genre lists, plot summaries, author information, award lists, book jacket images, and book reviews from more than 30 sources. User-friendly tools allow users to store reading and search lists, create reviews and ratings, and graphically view search term relationships.

CAMIO
OCLC's Catalog of Art Museum Images Online is a growing online collection documenting works of art from around the world, representing the collections of prominent museums. CAMIO highlights the creative output of cultures around the world, from prehistoric to contemporary times, and covering the complete range of expressive forms, including photographs, prints, sculpture, paintings, decorative arts, utilitarian objects, drawings, watercolors, costume, jewelry, textiles, architecture, and more. CAMIO is licensed for use by students, faculty, and researchers at subscribing institutions. Works of art may be used for educational and research purposes during the term of the subscription, if they are properly credited. Images may not be published or otherwise distributed.

Choice Reviews
Reviews significant current books and electronic resources of interest to those in higher education. Each year CHOICE publishes more than 6,500 reviews by subject experts.

Columbia Granger's World of Poetry
An index to poems published in anthologies. Some of the poems indexed in this database are full text. Included in Granger's World of Poetry are The Classic Hundred Poems, The Top 500 Poems, The Columbia Granger's Index to Poetry in Anthologies, editions 8-12, The Columbia Granger's Index to Poetry in Collected and Selected Works, editions 1-2, and The Columbia Granger's Index to African-American Poetry.

Contemporary Authors
Provides access to current biographical and bibliographical data on more than 120,000 modern authors with continuously updated information on the most active authors in this database. Included are author-provided updates, expanded entries, bibliographies, awards, and recent update information.

Contemporary Literary Criticism Select
Provides extensive biographical and critical information on more than 600 significant authors.

CultureGrams
Provides concise, reliable and up-to-date country reports on the cultures of the world--from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe!
Dictionary of Literary Biography
Contains more than 11,700 biocritical essays on authors and their works written by academic scholars.

e-Duke Journals Scholarly Collection: Expanded
Provides online access to journal titles published by Duke University Press. Subjects include the Humanities and Social Sciences. The number of titles in the collection is expected to grow from year to year. All of the journals are also accessible by title through the library's Journals by Title webpage.

Enciclopedia Universal en Español (from Encyclopedia Britannica)
A comprehensive encyclopedia in the Spanish language published by Encyclopedia Britannica. It contains over 47,000 articles, 8,300 photos and images, 65,000 dictionary entries, a world atlas, timelines for general, art, and cultural history, and more.

Essay and General Literature Index (H.W. Wilson on EBSCOhost)
A unique reference database that cites records contained in collections of essays and miscellaneous works published in the United States, Great Britain, and Canada. More than 320 single and multi-authored volumes are indexed annually with more than 20 selected annuals and serial publications. Focuses on the humanities and social sciences, with subject coverage ranging from economics, political science, and history to criticism of literary works, drama, and film.

European Views of the Americas: 1493-1750
Covering European works relating to the Americas, this database contains more than 32,000 entries and is a comprehensive guide to printed records about the Americas written in Europe before 1750. It covers the history of European exploration as well as portrayals of native American peoples. A wide range of subject areas are covered; from natural disasters to disease outbreaks and slavery. The database was adapted from the bibliography European Americana: A Chronological Guide to Works Printed In Europe Relating to The Americas, 1493-1750, co-developed by John Alden and Dennis Landis, Curator of European Books at The John Carter Brown Library.

A general database that contains full text and indexed articles from magazines, newspapers, books and journals in most disciplines ranging from architecture to biology and history to mathematics.

Grove Music Online
This compendium of music scholarship offers the full texts of the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, the New Grove Dictionary of Opera, and the New Grove Dictionary of Jazz. It includes 50,000 signed articles and 28,000 biographies contributed by over 6,000 scholars from around the world on all aspects of music. Grove Music Online is now part of Oxford Music Online, which also includes the Oxford Dictionary of Music and the Oxford Companion to Music.

JSTOR
An archive of scholarly journals that offers high-resolution, scanned images of journal issues and pages as they were originally designed, printed, and illustrated. The journals archived in JSTOR span many disciplines. Because of JSTOR's archival mission, there is a gap, typically from 1 to 5 years, between the most recently published journal issue and the back issues available in JSTOR.

Literary-Historical Timeline
This literary timeline is incuded on a separate tab from within Literature Resource Center and allows you to target a specific date range for literary figures, movements, and historical events. The Literary Timeline Search offers a sociological, cultural, and historical context alongside literary reference. It provides you with a sense of events that took place in an author's life and/or the period in which a work was published, helping to make interdisciplinary connections.

An index for Gale literature publication materials. This includes Twentieth Century Literary Criticism, Children's Literature Review, Nonfiction Classics for Students, and many more.

Literature Resource Center
A database which will help you find up-to-date biographical information, overviews, full-text literary criticism and reviews on nearly 130,000 writers in all disciplines, from all time periods and from around the world. It allows you to search each of the following databases individually or together: Contemporary Authors, Contemporary Literary Criticism Select, Dictionary of Literary Biography, Literature Resource Center, Scribner Writer's Series, Twayne's English Authors, Twayne's US Authors, and Twayne's World Authors.

MagillOnLiterature Plus
Combining MagillOnLiterature and MagillOnAuthors, this database includes all the literary works, reviewed critical analyses and brief plot summaries that are included in MagillOnLiterature, as well as all the biographies and author essays included in MagillOnAuthors.

MLA International Bibliography (EBSCOHost)
Offers a detailed bibliography of journal articles, books and dissertations. Produced by the Modern Language Association, the electronic version of the bibliography dates back to the 1920s and contains over 1.8 million citations from more than 4,400 journals & series and 1,000 book publishers.

New York Times
Selected full text of the New York Times from 1985 to the present is available in several of the library's databases, with complete digital coverage from 2008 to three months ago available in ProQuest Digital Microfilm. In addition, the library keeps the last 8 weeks of the newspaper in paper format, and has 1851 to 2009 on microfilm. To locate the correct resource for the date you need, see this list.

Opposing Viewpoints in Context   
Provides contextual information and opinions on hundreds of today's hottest social issues. Oxford Companion to Music
This fulltext resource includes articles that range from clear, concise definitions of musical ideas and terms to extended surveys of musical forms and styles. Including jazz, popular music, and dance, the Companion offers a concentrated focus on the Western classic tradition, from the Middle Ages to the present day. Oxford Companion to Music is now part of Oxford Music Online, which also includes the Oxford Dictionary of Music and Grove Music Online.

Oxford Dictionary of Music
This fulltext resource includes entries on composers, performers, conductors, musical terms and forms, instruments, works, venues, individual works including operas and ballets, musical styles, and much more. Oxford Dictionary of Music is now part of Oxford Music Online, which also includes the Oxford Companion to Music and Grove Music Online.

Oxford English Dictionary
Find the definition, pronunciation, etymology, quotations, and a date chart for words in the dictionary.

Oxford Journals Online
Provides abstract and full text access to journals published by Oxford University Press. Disciplines covered in Oxford Journals are the humanities, law, life sciences, mathematics & physical sciences, medicine, and social sciences.

Oxford Music Online
This fulltext resource offers users the ability to access and cross-search the resources of Oxford's music reference in one location. It includes Grove Music Online, the Oxford Companion to Music, and the Oxford Dictionary of Music.

Oxford Reference Online Premium
Combines language and subject reference works together to form a large reference library. It contains over 100 dictionary, language reference, and subject reference works.

Play Index (H.W. Wilson on EBSCOhost)
Indexes over 30,000 plays written from Antiquity to the present and published from 1949 to the present. Covers a wide range of plays written in or translated into English, including mysteries, pageants, plays in verse, puppet performances, radio and television plays, and classic drama. Search for plays by title, author, subject, style, genre, or cast type. Provides the full publication details needed to locate the play in its published manifestations.

Scribner Writers Series
Features more than 1,500 biocritical essays on authors of all nationalities and time periods.

SIRS Knowledge Source
A comprehensive database portal which is comprised of several distinct reference databases including SIRS Researcher, SIRS Government Reporter, SIRS Renaissance, SIRS WebSelect, SIRS Discoverer, and Discoverer WebFind. SIRS provides relevant, credible, full text information on social issues, science, history, government, the arts and humanities.

Twayne's English Authors
Offers in-depth introductions to the lives and works of writers from Great Britain, the history and influence of literary movements and to the development of literary genres. It is devoted to literary critical interpretation and discussion written for readers ranging from high school students to scholars. Each entry explores criticism with new insights and original points of view.

CINAHL Plus with Full Text
A comprehensive source for nursing and allied health journals, providing indexing for over 2,700 journals with full text for more than 620 journals, plus full text for 218 books/monographs, with some full text coverage dating back to 1937. CINAHL Plus with Full Text also includes the Pre-CINAHL dataset, which is intended to provide current awareness of new journal articles, providing basic bibliographic information before they are indexed with CINAHL Headings. As Pre-CINAHL journal articles are indexed, the records are replaced with complete CINAHL records.

Health and Wellness Resource Center (Gale Group)
Provides integrated access to medical, statistical, health, and wellness information. It includes the Gale Encyclopedia of Medicine, up-to-date reference materials, full-text magazines, journals, and pamphlets from a wide variety of authoritative medical sources, and health and medical videos. Additionally descriptions of and links to several pertinent Web sites, selected for their usefulness and appropriateness are among the resources in Health & Wellness Resource Center. Modules for Health and Wellness Resource Center offer additional specialized information segments. The Alternative Health module looks at health care from a holistic lens. The Disease Profiler module offers an empirical, statistical complement to the disease information in HWRC.

A collection of consumer health information, providing access to nearly 80 full text, consumer health magazines. An authoritative database continaing peer-reviewed journals in the most promising areas of biotechnology, biomedical research/life sciences, clinical medicine and surgery, and law.

MEDLINE (EBSCOHost)
An authoritative medical information database for medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, the health care system, pre-clinical sciences, etc. Created by the National Library of Medicine, MEDLINE uses MeSH (Medical Subject Headings) indexing with tree, tree hierarchy, subheadings and explosion capabilities to search citations from over 4,800 current biomedical journals.

Searchable index to 30 full-text nursing journals.

Nursing Resource Center
Designed for nursing students, the Nursing Resource Center brings together in an easy-to-use interface disease and drug overviews, care plans, relevant journal results and animated anatomy and physiology diagrams to complement the core encyclopedia texts. The information is written in accessible language for students completing class assignments and preparing for clinicals as they learn how to care for and treat patients. Search results are returned in tabs that correspond to steps in the nursing process.

Contains citations from biomedical literature (MEDLINE and OLDMEDLINE) and provides access and links to molecular biology resources. If a journal publisher has a web site that offers full-text of its journals, PubMed provides links to that site as well as biological resources, consumer health information, research tools, etc. links to some full-text articles at journal Web sites and other related Web resources. PubMed covers the fields of medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, the health care system and the preclinical sciences.

Science in Context (Gale)

SPORTDiscus (EBSCOHost)
A database that contains bibliographic coverage of sport, fitness and related disciplines. It contains over 650,000 records (partially full text) with journal and monograph coverage going back to 1800; over 20,000 dissertations and theses and reference to articles in 60 different languages.

SpringerLink
An online collection of science, technology, and mathematics (STM) books, journals, and reference works from Springer-Verlag. Subject areas covered include Architecture and Design; Behavioral Science; Biomedical and Life Sciences; Business and Economics; Chemistry and Materials Science; Computer Science; Earth and Environmental Science; Engineering, Humanities, Social Sciences and Law; Mathematics and Statistics; Medicine; Physics and Astronomy; Professional and Applied Computing.
