Charleston Southern Xtreme Makeover Hits Summerville

CHARLESTON – One would expect to see new college students carrying backpacks and books …but hammers and paintbrushes? On Saturday, Aug. 26, about 300 new Charleston Southern students will join with the city of Summerville and Summerville Baptist Church for a day of Xtreme Makeovers.
At 8 a.m., groups of 10-12 students will leave Summerville Baptist with their crew chiefs and supplies to head to their work sites. The project assignments will include painting, yard work, roof repair and light construction. All projects will be done in the Summerville area.
“We realize it is not enough to say we care for our community and then do nothing to make it better,” said Clark Carter, campus minister. “Xtreme Makeover will give our students the opportunity to put their faith into action.”
The event will be followed by a program called Catalyst where students will continue to be involved in monthly community activities and projects, including Habitat for Humanity, assisting in United Way projects, and others.
“This is an initiative we have been planning for and praying about for years,” said Dr. Rick Brewer, vice president for planning and student affairs.
“The time is now.”
