Imelda Tirtajaya

Dr. Imelda Tirtajaya found her passion for teaching and higher education during her college years, where she worked as an English Laboratory Assistant in her sophomore, junior and senior year. Once she achieved her Bachelor of Science degree in Food Technology, she was hired as a full-time junior faculty at the Pelita Harapan University, where she was responsible for teaching freshman and sophomore level laboratory courses for two years.

She received a Fulbright scholarship and came to the United States to pursue her M.S. degree in Food Science at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst (UMass Amherst). After the completion of her M.S. degree, she went back to her alma mater in Indonesia, where she taught and advised students for two years. When the time was right, she left Indonesia and went back to UMass Amherst for her Ph.D. degree, where she was also responsible for teaching Food Science elective course for non-majors during the first two years of her Ph.D. career. Altogether she has 6 years of teaching experience both in Indonesia and the United States prior to coming to CSU and becoming part of the Biology Department in Fall 2013. Her area of specialty is food science, food microbiology, and food safety.

Dr. Tirtajaya is not only passionate about teaching and interacting with her students; she is also passionate about living life for God and how she practices science in light of her faith in Jesus Christ. She believes that God is the Creator of all things, including science. Even though science cannot explain everything, she believes that science is part of the general revelation that God has given to the human race, and that God also uses science to reveal things about Himself. She believes that as Christians we are called to practice science responsibly, in ways that brings honor and glory to God.

She enjoys reading a good book on Christian theology, Christian classics and Christian apologetics. Some of her favorite authors are R. C. Sproul, Timothy Keller, Philip Yancey, Ravi Zacharias, A. W. Tozer, and C. S. Lewis. She also enjoys good conversation with a few good friends about science and faith over a cup of coffee.
