Melinda Walker

Dr. Melinda Walker received her Ph.D. in Molecular and Cellular Biology and Pathobiology from the Medical University of South Carolina in 1989.  Her graduate research experience involved cellular, immunologic and histopathologic processes that occur in the two fibrotic disorders of emphysema and scleroderma.  Her research involving interventions for these processes led to the patent of a new pharmacologic treatment for scleroderma and she received an American Lung Association Award for her emphysema research.

At CSU she teaches Anatomy and Physiology, Microbiology, Nutrition, Epidemiology and General Biology.  She has directed student research in the areas of developing algae that produce biofuels and the degradation of plastic bags by bacteria. Dr. Walker is also the advisor for CSU’s chapter of Beta Beta Beta Biological Honor Society.

As advisor, she has led the chapter in a number of activities including community based service projects such as Habitat for Humanity, volunteering at homeless shelters, helping the SPCA; science based competitions; debates; hosting science or leadership seminars; and a variety of study trips including a mission trip to India, a global education trip to Israel, and local excursions to zoos and aquariums.
