Jill Terhaar Lewis

Associate Professor of Music, Vocal Area Coordinator


Soprano Jill Terhaar Lewis is a native of Greencreek, Idaho. She is an Associate Professor of Vocal Music at Charleston Southern University, and received her DMA in Vocal Performance from the University of South Carolina.  Dr. Lewis is a respected performer in the Southeast Region. She is a soloist with the Charleston Symphony Orchestra as well as a guest artist for the Baker and Baker Recital Series at the Columbia Museum of Art and is a recurring featured soloist in the Piccolo Spoleto Festival including Spotlight Concerts with Piccolo Spoleto Festival Orchestra under Dr. Donald Portnoy. She is also a recurring guest with the Hilton Head Choral Society, among other area orchestras and ensembles. She is a frequent soloist with the Charleston Southern Concert Singers. She has recently traveled with the group to Hungary on a two-week concert tour. She has also performed in Spain, England, Northern Italy, Germany, Austria and the Czech Republic, as well as in New York City and the surrounding areas.     

Dr. Lewis regularly performs recitals in the Southeast, and has a penchant for late Romantic music and American art song. She has presented American art song programs in Michigan, Idaho, South Carolina and Georgia. She has collaborated on art songs with composers in Michigan and South Carolina and has performed in a master class with renowned American composer Libby Larsen. In Charleston, she commissioned and premiered a program of new sacred works by South Carolinian composers for soprano and organ that she performed with Alan Davis. She and her Charleston Southern students have also collaborated with the composition faculty and student composers from the College of Charleston presenting Contemporary Collaborations, concerts of new music by student composers for student musicians. The Contemporary Collaborations ensemble performs new music concerts every two years. Dr. Lewis and Dr. Yiorgos Vassilandonakis, of College of Charleston, have presented on this project at the South Carolina National Association of Singing (NATS) Fall Workshop, the Charleston Southern University Spring Symposium, and recenttly at the NATS National Conference in held in Chicago.

 Dr. Lewis also enjoys opera has presented programs featuring opera with the Charleston Southern voice faculty and guests.  Some of her favorite roles include Suor Angelica in Suor Angelica, Blanche in Dialogues of the Carmelites, and Rosalinde in Die Fledermaus.  She was a semi-finalist in the Opera Birmingham vocal competition and a regional finalist in the National Association of Teachers of Singing Artist Award program. She is also a winner of the Charlotte Opera Guild Vocal Competition and a Metropolitan Opera National Council District Winner and Regional Finalist.

Jill is married to jazz musician and saxophonist Robert Lewis. Jill and Robert have had opportunity to collaborate on projects in both the classical and jazz fields. Together they perform with jazz pianist Gerald Gregory as "The In-Between", an ensemble performing new compositions and arrangements that lie both in and in-between classical and jazz genres. The trio has recorded and released a successful crossover CD of jazz, popular and folk songs entitled “And Now I Know” (2010) and have plans to release two new CDs in early 2017. Together the trio has performed concerts in the region and recently toured the Pacific Northwest and are slated to tour in the upstate this winter.  They have been featured in the Hi Harmony Concert in Charleston with the Jazz Artists of Charleston, the Piccolo Spoleto Festival as part of the Spotlight Concert Series and the Piccolo Comes to Kiawah Series.
