Associate Professor of Music, Director of Jazz Studies


Saxophonist Mark Sterbank, originally from Cleveland, Ohio, is Associate Professor of Jazz Studies and Saxophone at Charleston Southern University where he directs the jazz ensembles and teaches saxophone, improvisation, jazz theory, woodwind techniques and performance class. Mark came to Charleston by way of New York City where he spent four years working in music ministry at the Times Square Church. He holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the Eastman School of Music where he earned the prestigious Performer’s Certificate and a Master of Music degree from the University of New Orleans where he also studied with pianist Ellis Marsalis under a jazz study grant from the National Endowment of the Arts. Currently, Mark performs in the Charleston, South Carolina area as a freelance saxophonist as well as with the Quentin Baxter Quintet, the Charlton Singleton Quintet, and as tenor saxophonist and arranger for the Charleston Jazz Orchestra.

His first CD of original compositions Dayspring, released in 2014, was featured on Sirius XM Radio's Real Jazz. He has previously released two CDs of jazz hymns and spirituals and presents an annual concert featuring his hymns and spirituals arrangements at CSU. He has performed with the Charleston, Savannah and Hilton Head Symphony Orchestras and performed as classical soloist in both Charleston and Cleveland. His credits include performances with Rene Marie and her band Experiment in Truth, John Brown's Carolina Big Band, the Darius Rucker Big Band, the Cab Calloway Orchestra, the Jimmy Dorsey Band, the Harry James Orchestra, the Harry Connick, Jr. Orchestra, Etienne Charles, Wycliffe Gordon, Fred Wesley, Patrick Davis and his Midnight Choir, Elise Testone, Lynard Skynard, the O.J.’s, Mary Wilson, Eartha Kitt, and the Temptations.
