English Proficiency

Charleston Southern University requires all international students whose native language is not English to confirm English proficiency for university studies.  CSU will accept the following minimum scores from these English Proficiency Exams:

In addition, CSU will accept the following as evidence of English proficiency:

  • IB Exam--Higher-Level English: 5
  • AP Exam English Language and Composition: 4
  • Two years at a US college or university or high school: ‘C’ or better in core subjects.

Official exam scores/transcripts must be sent directly to the Enrollment Services Office from the testing agency/institution. 

International students that prove sufficient English proficiency through the TOEFL or IELTS may have the SAT requirement waived.  Contact CSU’s International Student Enrollment Counselor for more information at

CSU may conditionally admit international students without an English proficiency exam if they have successfully completed and graduated from an approved Intensive English Program.  The international student must have completed an approved Intensive English Program at a minimum level equivalent to a score of 71 on an internet-based TOEFL exam.  All Intensive English Programs much be accredited by CEA (Commission on English Language Program Accreditation) or ACCET (Accrediting Council for Continuing Education and Training).  For a list of approved Intensive English Programs, contact the International Student Enrollment Counselor at

Students from the following English speaking countries are not required to submit English proficiency exams but must submit SAT or ACT scores:
