Moving out while social distancing

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Charleston Southern University campus will be closed to students and visitors for the remainder of the spring 2020 semester. The Residence Life staff has a plan in place to get our Bucs moved out as safely, quickly and efficiently as possible. All while limiting contact with other students and staff.

What You Need to Know

  1. The move-out process will be conducted over a two-week period between April 1-14.
    • Please note that in the event the City of North Charleston or State of South Carolina issues a shelter-in-place order, the retrieval process may be modified or delayed. University officials are monitoring the situation daily and will be in communication with you should we need to modify or delay the process.
  2. Students will sign up for a checkout day/time slot.
  3. For extenuating circumstances, students must complete this Unable to Retrieve Belongings Form to request an exception.

See below for further instruction:

April 1-14
9 a.m., 1 p.m., or 5 p.m.

Only 10 residents are allowed in each residence hall per time slot.

Each resident will have a three-hour window to move out of their room.

Residents should select a time window that is different from their roommate(s) and suitemates.

  • To help maintain social distance, residents may only bring two individuals to assist with moving out.
  • No one may enter the building if they have symptoms of COVID-19, may have been exposed to COVID-19, or are considered high-risk of exposure as outlined by the CDC and DHEC.
  • No one will be permitted to stay overnight on campus, and students must leave once they move out. (The Wingate by Wyndham on campus is offering a $79 per-night rate for displaced CSU students and family members. The hotel can be reached by calling 843-553-4444.)

Each residence hall will have a “checkout table with the following resources: “Express Checkout” document, envelopes, pens, business cards, instructions, hand sanitizer, a sign listing contact information for ResLife, and a sign listing checkout instruction.

  • Students will stop by the checkout table for instructions.
  • WN/WS – LJP front desk
  • RE/RW – In front of the Learning Center
  • New Residence Hall – Front Desk
  • Quads – Quad 2 Lounge
  1. Remove all personal belongings from your room. Make sure to check your drawers, closet, and any common spaces (bathroom, lobbies, laundry rooms).
  2. Clean your room:
    • Remove all trash and take it to the dumpsters outside of the residence halls. Do not leave trash or unwanted items anywhere except the dumpsters.
    • Wipe down all surfaces, sweep/vacuum, & mop the floor
    • Take down and throw away shower curtain/liner
    • Return furniture to its original position, if able
    • Set AC to 68ºF and dump dehumidifier buckets (if applicable)
  3. Close and lock windows, turn off lights, and lock door
  4. Place your key and FOB (if applicable) in an empty envelope found at the checkout station
  5. Staple or tape Express Checkout form to front of envelope.
  6. Then drop the envelope in the box at the table location.

We miss all of you and look forward to seeing you back on campus in August!

Residents may sign up to move out beginning April 1, 2020 through April 14, 2020. Sign up here. Make sure to review the process before coming to check out.

We understand some states have mandated residents stay home and some are preventing entry and/or exit from the state. If your state’s leaders ask you to follow certain protocol that keep you from coming to check-out April 1-14, 2020, please complete this form. We will work with CSU residents who are unable to come during the check-out period. We will likely set up a check-out period for early May. Future plans are dependent upon the development of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Residents of the same household (brother, sister, or housemates) may come to check out at the same time. Please have each student sign up for the time slot to ensure no more than 10 residents are in the building at once.

CSU leaders are working through what type of refund or credit will be given to residential students that left and have not been utilizing their meal plan. Please continue to check the CSU website for updates.

Communication is key. Please notify or 843-863-7190 immediately if your travel plans change. We will remain flexible, but ask you keep us informed if your plans change.

Residence Life will have a few hand trucks available for resident use. Residents can check these carts out from the security squad room on the first floor of Russell West 1st. Carts can only be checked out by those with a valid CSU ID and must be returned after you finish moving out.

If you have already moved out of the residence halls but still have your key and/or FOB, please return these to us through USPS. Our mailing address is:
