Charleston Southern University has announced new changes to Campus Security for the 2017-18 academic year. John Wilson, Director of Campus Security, said the enhancements are an ongoing effort to increase visibility and mobility, which is an integral part of our community policing efforts.
One of the new additions students and campus guests will see this fall is the addition of panic buttons. The new technology will be mounted on blue poles with strobe lights on top. When the panic button is activated, a message transmits immediately to the radios carried by Campus Security officers directing them to the specific location. Wilson said the security enhancement will provide “another layer of security for our campus community.”
In addition, Allied Universal, a national security provider at many colleges and universities, has been contracted as the campus security provider. This company will add complimentary support to CSU’s campus security team.
CSU also participates in a relationship with the North Charleston Police Department. The NCPD, the primary law enforcement support for the community, responds to calls for service, assisting with any serious crimes and incidents and supplementing manpower for special events.
“We have 24/7 armed security patrols, cameras, emergency phones, security escorts, and our Emergency Notification System (BucAlert) to assist in our goal of keeping our campus safe and secure,” said Wilson.
CSU will also implement a new electronic ticketing system to enhance parking enforcement and record keeping for all tickets issued on campus. According to Wilson, the technology is expected should be in place by the fall semester.
The mission of CSU’s Campus Security is to ensure a safe and secure environment for everyone who enters our campus. The goal is to provide students, faculty, staff and guests the ability to learn, lead and serve in stress free, safe and secure surroundings.
The security office is located on the first floor of Russell West. For more information on campus security, inmportant emergency information and contact numbers, visit CSU Campus Security online.
