Charleston Southern University students Lauryn Kay and Taryn Wetherington have advanced to the semifinal round of the National Association of Teachers of Singing’s National Student Auditions in Chicago July 9 during the NATS 54th Annual National Conference.

Only the top 14 students in the nation in each category will compete.

Wetherington, a student of Dr. Jill Terhaar Lewis, competed in the Fourth/Fifth Year College/Independent Studio Women category, and Kay, a student of Dr. Jennifer Luiken, competed in the Lower Advanced College/Independent Studio Women category. Both are classical music categories.

Wetherington is a senior majoring in music performance – voice. Kay is a 2015 CSU graduate in music performance – voice and is currently pursuing an artist certificate at CSU. Wetherington was the first-place winner in her category at the state level.

Both earned scores high enough to advance to the Mid-Atlantic Region competition in March. At the Mid-Atlantic Region, Kay and Wetherington each placed in the top five in their respective categories, earning them a chance to compete in the Preliminary Video Round at the national level.

Wetherington was also a semifinalist in the NATS 2014 National Student Auditions in Boston. Both Kay and Wetherington are frequent prize winners at the SCNATS and Mid-Atlantic Region NATS events.

The National Association of Teachers of Singing hosts progressive student auditions each year in categories for Classical, Music Theater, Contemporary Commercial Music, and African-American Spiritual repertoire, separated by age and length of study.
