Academy developing next generation of leaders

Marketing and Communication // 06.30.2017

What makes a good leader? Is it about setting an example, injecting influence, showing humility, projecting a vision? The answer is yes -- to all of the above. But that is not all of what a good leader might be.

“The Student Leadership Academy (SLA) develops students with a biblical worldview and equips them to lead in whatever capacity their future holds,” said Nick Ballenger, SLA program director.

Charleston Southern University will begin its second year of the Student Leadership Academy on Tuesday, September 26 at 12 p.m. in the Drew Conference Center inside the Whitfield Center for Christian Leadership.

The two-semester program is open to CSU sophomore, junior and senior students. SLA students will have the opportunity to attend monthly leadership luncheons, participate in field trips and attend exclusive leadership-driven campus events. In addition, students will have the opportunity to complete an internship in the vocation of their choice.

Senior psychology major, Anna Dyer, is interning this summer at Student Leadership University in Orlando, Florida. Dyer believes in the program. “SLA is an exciting new program that CSU has to offer with much potential for forming foundations that young Christian leaders need when they are just starting out.”

Another rising senior, Ayana Thomas, is an economics major. She already believes she is a better leader in her student organizations along with her professional life.  “The concepts and skills I have learned have been irreplaceable in both preparing for graduate school and being a Christian in the workforce.”

“We should be intentional about developing student leaders,” said Executive Vice President Dr. Michael Bryant. “Our culture cries for good leaders who influence and serve others.”
