CSU Summer Music Camp sparks a passion

Marketing and Communication // 08.02.2016

You don’t have to ask Skylar Blackburn if she enjoyed her first-ever summer music camp, just watch – and listen to -- her.

In an email to CSU music professor and camp director Dr. Marshall Forrester, Skylar’s dad, William, says since the camp ended “… she is still talking about it three weeks later, singing the songs,” he wrote. “It was a wonderful experience for her. She learned so much in one week; it was amazing to watch.”

Charleston Southern University drew more than 300 students to its annual 2016 Summer Music Camp. The camp attracted students from South Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, North Carolina, Nevada and Arizona.

Forrester and associate camp director Dr. Nicholas Holland reported more than 60 faculty and staff and approximately 20 current CSU students who previously attended music camp served as camp leaders and instructors.

William Blackburn said Skylar is already making her plans for next year’s camp while she continues to learn by participating in her school’s chorus and at church. Plus, Skylar has a birthday coming up, and dad said she will be getting a piano and lessons.

“Her goal right now is to become a music teacher,” he said. “She told me she wants to attend CSU for college from attending this camp,” he said. “I told her she still has a long way to go but it is always great to have a goal to work for.”
