VITAL Initiative Serving CSU Student Veterans

Marketing and Communication // 09.15.2016

In an effort to streamline services and better meet needs, Veterans Affairs is making services available to student vets on college campuses.

The Veterans Integration to Academic Leadership Initiative is designed to provide world-class healthcare and improve the overall mental health of veterans and support their successful integration into campus life by increasing access to the VA’s services.

Through a partnership with the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center, the VA is now offering clinical services at Charleston Southern on Wednesday afternoons.

Charles West, LISW-CP, an outpatient mental health social worker, is CSU’s VITAL Initiative Coordinator, and he is available to assist student vets with numerous services.

Some of the services offered by VITAL are:

  • Helping vets enroll with Veterans Affairs
  • Assisting with paperwork and helping vets communicate with the VA
  • Assisting with mental health counseling and medication management
  • Efficient coordination of all available services
  • Educating faculty and staff members about the needs of veteran students

Student veterans at CSU can reach West via his cell phone at 843-806-7371, his VA office number, 843-789-7968 or by visiting him in the CSU counseling services office on the second floor of Russell West on Wednesday afternoons.

Although the VITAL program is just getting started in the Charleston area, it is well-established nationally and in enhancing the academic success of student veterans.
