Writing Center

The Writing Center's mission is to help undergraduate and graduate students become better writers. It is a place to talk through your writing and receive feedback from other writers in one-on-one sessions, both on campus and online.

We can help you to:

  • Analyze and understand writing assignments
  • Address academic audiences appropriately, including using academic grammar and style
  • Craft thesis statements
  • Organize arguments effectively
  • Proofread your own writing
  • Cite sources appropriately
  • Improve non-academic writing (creative writing, application essays, and more!)

To learn more about our three forms of tutoring and to make an appointment, see below.

Face-to-Face Tutoring

If you’re on campus, this is the best option, because you can easily ask questions and interact with a tutor in person. Please either bring printed copies of your assignment sheet and your draft, or attach electronic copies to your appointment form, and the tutor will be able to look at them with you in the Writing Center.

The Writing Center is located in Norris Hall 209. During fall and spring semesters, we also offer evening tutoring in the library.

Spring 2019 Hours (January 14 - April 26)

Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m. - 6 p.m., Norris 209
Monday-Thursday, 6 - 9 p.m., South Carolina Room in the Library
Friday, 9 a.m. - 2 p.m., Norris 209

Online Tutoring

Online tutoring allows you to chat electronically with a tutor as you go over your draft together. Make sure to select an appointment during a time when you are able to participate in the chat; this way you can ask questions and receive instant feedback. Please include the professor’s assignment and your draft with your appointment form. At the time of your appointment, click on your appointment on the Writing Center schedule, and select “Start or Join Online Consultation” to begin the chat.

Spring 2019 Hours (January 14 - April 26)

Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m. - 9 p.m.
Friday, 9 a.m. - 2 p.m.
Saturday, 3 - 5 p.m.

eTutoring is our option for online students who may be in different time zones or have less flexible schedules that make Online Tutoring (above) less practical. If you select eTutoring, please fill out the appointment form in as much detail as possible so that we know what questions you have about your own writing. Include attachments of the professor’s assignment and your draft. The tutor will not proofread your writing, but rather will give tips to help you become a more effective writer.

Spring 2019 Hours (January 14 - April 26)

Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m. - 9 p.m.
Friday, 9 a.m. - 2 p.m.
Saturday, 3 - 5 p.m.
