Monitoring Tropical Storm Nicole

By Jenna Johnson | November 9, 2022

The Charleston Southern University Emergency Management Team is monitoring the path and projected impacts of Tropical Storm Nicole. According to the National Hurricane Center, the storm is currently on a path to Florida’s Atlantic coast and will likely become a Category 1 hurricane early Thursday morning. After making landfall, it is projected to move northeast quickly across Georgia and South Carolina on Friday.

Forecasters in our area predict bands of heavy rain and gusty winds beginning Thursday and into the first half of the day Friday. Two to four inches of rain is possible in some areas, with the biggest impacts felt along the coast with tidal flooding, high surf, and beach erosion. Gusts of up to 50 mph are possible.

As of now, CSU will remain on its current operating schedule this week. If the storm intensifies, we will alert the campus of possible closure to ensure the safety of our campus family. As always, important updates will be sent via campuswide email, with urgent releases also communicated via BucAlert (the campus emergency notification system), the website, and social media as necessary.

In the meantime, brush up on CSU’s emergency procedures here as well as personal emergency planning with the latest Hurricane Guide here.

Stay safe, watch your inbox for updates, and pray for Nicole to be nothing but a little rainstorm.
