Performing is for all majors

By John Kerrigan | April 4, 2025

Did you know you can participate in CSU’s music and performing arts programs without being a music
major or minor?

The Horton School of Music and Performing Arts does not require you to even have experience in music. So, if you’ve ever wanted to play in one of CSU’s many instrumental ensembles, or sing in any of our choirs, or go on stage and perform in a play or musical you can!

Still skeptical about joining? Here are some benefits to participating in CSU’s music program with
comments from non-music majors who participate in the program:

  • It’s fun to participate: This one is a given, especially if you enjoy performing music. While
being a part of CSU’s music program you will have many rewarding and fun experiences in
rehearsals and performances. “It’s fun,” said David Beckley, a freshman aeronautics major said
about the best part of participating in CSU’s music program.
  • Community: Obviously the best way to make friends while in college is to get involved in an
activity. CSU’s music program offers a nurturing and God-first community for anyone, regardless
    of major.
  • Opportunity to learn from some of Charleston’s best musicians: CSU’s music professors are
very active playing in Charleston when they are not teaching. “I consider it an absolute honor to
learn from our CSU music professors. The music department is truly like a family, and I will
always be grateful for everything that I have learned and every connection I have made during
my time here,” said Grace Sussman, a junior English education major.
  • GPA booster: CSU’s music ensembles can be taken for one credit hour. As long as you show up
to rehearsals, you will get an extra A on your final grade report, which is a fun way to boost your
    overall GPA for the semester.
  • Scholarship opportunity: If you play in CSU music ensembles, there is a chance you can do so for
scholarship, even if you aren’t a music major. Please note that there are some exceptions and
    requirements to playing on scholarship.
  • Summer trip opportunity: HSMPA takes a yearly summer trip, in recent years they have gone to
the UK and other European countries. During their travels, the HSMPA tours different churches
sharing their talents. The trips cost significantly less than a normal trip to these places.

What are you waiting for? Polish up your middle school instrument, or practice your singing or acting,
and get involved.
