Charleston Southern University shares with deep sadness and abiding hope in Christ the news that Pastor Sonny Holmes, a former member of the Charleston Southern University Board of Trustees and beloved retired pastor of Northwood Baptist Church, entered into the eternal presence of Jesus Christ on Wednesday, February 11, 2026.
A dynamic and visionary leader, Pastor Sonny wisely guided Northwood Baptist Church through seasons of growth and change that helped shape it into the thriving congregation it is today. He served there for 13 years of his ministry career. He was widely respected across the state, serving as president of the South Carolina Baptist Convention and offering trusted counsel to pastors, ministry leaders, and university presidents alike.
Pastor Sonny also held a special place in the life of Charleston Southern University. As a former trustee, valued advisor, and beloved adjunct faculty member, he mentored generations of students while teaching Old and New Testament Survey.
A devoted husband and father, Sonny is survived by his wife, Harriet, and together they modeled a Christ-centered partnership in ministry. They showed many what it looks like to grieve with hope following the tragic loss of their son, Brian. Sonny also leaves a legacy behind through his daughter, Liz, andcherished grandchildren.
Pastor Sonny’s legacy is one of faithful service, bold leadership, compassionate care, and unwavering love for Christ and His people. We join with his family, church, and the broader faith community in grieving this great loss while rejoicing in the promise of eternal life.
Funeral services will be held at Northwood Baptist Church on Saturday, February 21. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., followed by the funeral service at 1 p.m.
