Bachelor of Arts (BA), Music

The Bachelor of Arts in music degree is ideal for students who wish to pursue broad study in music while also double majoring or minoring in other fields. Students majoring in music will participate in music classroom, studio, and ensemble coursework, with a variety of interdisciplinary options and capstone projects available — including experiential placements, lecture recitals, or demonstrations. Music students have a choice of minors in business, computer science, graphic design, theatre, or over 40 other fields.

At CSU, all music majors receive individual attention with outstanding and well-credentialed faculty who are active performers in the community and region. CSU’s mission and vision as a Christian institution of higher learning provides students the opportunity to study and understand their discipline from a Christian perspective and guides each student to develop their musical potential to its fullest.

Charleston Southern University’s accreditation can be found here.
CSU is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music.

“Studying music performance at the Horton School of Music and Performing Arts was a life-altering experience that has prepared me well for musical success and has shaped me as a follower of Christ. While at Charleston Southern, I had the opportunity to perform frequently as a soloist, tour Europe with the Wind Ensemble, play at Carnegie Hall, and even conduct and participate in ensembles. My time at CSU left a lasting impact on me, from the musical excellence, challenging academics, and most importantly, the profound love of Christ shown in the classroom and field of music.”

The Bachelor of Arts in music degree is the only Horton School of Music and Performing Arts degree that allows students to take on a minor. With over 40 minors available, students can tailor their education to any area of their choosing!

The Lightsey Chapel Auditorium (1,500 seats) features a modern stage and the Margaret Kelly Hamrick Prayer Room. The adjacent Lightsey Music Building houses faculty offices, practice facilities, and the Black Box Theatre. Whittington Hall provides classrooms, a rehearsal hall, practice rooms, and a music technology lab.

The Horton School of Music and Performing Arts prepares students for careers as professional musicians, educators and music therapists as well as serving as a center of musical art and culture for the Charleston region and beyond.
