By CSU Media | January 11, 2019

The university is mourning the passing of Dr. Franklin Mason, age 94, of Mullins, S.C., Jan. 11, 2019. Affectionately known as “Doc Mason,” he served several terms on the CSU Board of Trustees and was a longtime supporter of the university.

Reflecting on their shared love of running, CSU President, Dr. Dondi E. Costin, said, “Dr. Mason was a great example of 2 Timothy 4:7 which says, ‘I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.’ We are grateful for his faithful service to CSU.” Mason was an avid runner, completing more than 100 marathons and was a member of the South Carolina Runners Hall of Fame.

Mason was a dentist for more than 60 years in Mullins. In addition to his service with the CSU Board of Trustees, he served the university through the Board of Visitors Scholarship Program, established the Mason Family Endowed Scholarship, was a life member of the President’s Club and a member of the Legacy Society. Two of his daughters and his late son-in-law are CSU alumni.

The university awarded him an honorary doctor of humanities degree in 1981.

CSU President Emeritus, Dr. Jairy Hunter, said, “Dr. Mason has been one of the strongest supporters of CSU. He provided exemplary leadership as a trustee and served unselfishly for 15 years on the board. We will always remember Dr. Mason and his family as committed Christians and dear friends of CSU.”

In 2017, Mason received the Legacy Award from the Baptist Foundation of South Carolina for his outstanding support of the foundation through the establishment of legacy gifts.
