About Allen Fix

Professor Alan Fix has been a faculty member of Charleston Southern University’s Department of Criminal Justice for 17 years. Professor Fix and his family are originally from Indiana, where he was an Indiana State Conservation Officer for almost 30 years. Professor Fix was involved in many different aspects such as hunting and fishing violations, wildlife investigations, licensing, hunting-related homicides, and boating and snowmobile accidents.

Professor Fix obtained his bachelor’s degree from Indiana University and his master’s degree from Boston University. He very much enjoyed his job as a conservation officer, but he also became interested in teaching at the university level. In 2008, Professor Fix and his family moved to the Lowcountry area, where he was hired as a professor for Charleston Southern University to teach in the Criminal Justice Department. Professor Fix’s primary classes include: Introduction into Criminal Justice, Criminal Investigations, Crime Scene Techniques, Conservation Law Enforcement, Freshman Seminar, Theories of Criminal Justice, and is the department coordinator for the Criminal Justice Internship program.

During the summer semesters, Professor Fix has been managing the CSU Criminal Justice Camp. The camp typically has approximately 50 high school students from ages 14-18 attend each year. The camp is designed so the attendees will get a first-hand experience at the job of a First Responder and Public Safety officers. Attendees learn the procedures of managing prisons, crime labs, the use of drones, K-9 policing, crime scene investigations, up-to-date technology enhancements, and the connectivity to other agencies, including the coroner’s office, and much more. Participate are also engaged in hands-on experiences, such as investigating a mock crime scene, arresting procedures, and unique problems encountered every day in the criminal justice arena. This camp is always well-received and has been an annual event for many years.

"In the thirty plus years that I have taught classes, from elementary to college, from small police departments to the Police Academies, I have never thought about a specific purpose of teaching but rather I taught for the rewards I received from teaching and learning from my students. The idea of bringing real life experiences and situations to my class is the main drive behind my presentations. Lecturing and testing is an important part of any educational process but the hands on, down and dirty, get your feet wet experiences that I bring to the classroom is what will stay with the students for the rest of their lives. They may not remember what I said two weeks ago during a lecture but I guarantee not one of them will ever forget my crime scenes in my CSI classes. "
