Inside Conflict Diplomacy: A Fireside Conversation with Former Ambassador to Venezuela, James Story.

James “Jimmy” Story is a career Senior Foreign Service Officer who served as U.S. Ambassador and Chargé d’Affaires to Venezuela from 2018 to 2023. He was later nominated as U.S. Ambassador to Mozambique and, during the interim, served in senior diplomatic roles across Africa and the Caribbean while teaching as a Senior Fellow at Georgetown University. He retired from the U.S. Foreign Service in May 2025.

Over his distinguished career, Ambassador Story held senior leadership posts in Latin America, Africa, and conflict zones, including assignments in Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, Afghanistan, and at the U.S. Mission to the United Nations. He is the recipient of numerous State Department, interagency, and national intelligence awards for distinguished service.
