Utilize the Career Center

By Jillian Davis | November 22, 2024

The Career Center offers a variety of services to students to ensure their success when they leave Charleston Southern University, whether they go on to pursue further education, or go directly into the workforce.

Shallon Mims has worked with the Career Center since 2018 and has seen it evolve over the years. She is passionate about helping students be prepared for their next step, postgraduation.

The Number One Reason

The number one reason that students book an appointment with the Career Center is to have their resume reviewed. Mims and Lauren Totuszynski look over each resume prior to meeting with the student to check the content and readability of the resume.

Adulting 101

Mims teaches a class at CSU called Adulting 101 that will equip students in every aspect of their life, from finances to interviews to resumes.

In the Adulting 101 class, she walks students through their S.M.A.R.T. goals, navigating relationships of all kinds, building IQ, and confidence skills. They also discuss a monthly budget to be sure they are applying for jobs that will compensate for their quality of life.

Interview Tips

Mims offers great insight on how to succeed in an interview, including important items to do and what to avoid.

  1. Do your research on the company you are interviewing for.
  2. Ask at least one question before leaving the interview.
  3. Dress professionally.
  4. Do not show up late.
  5. Do not chew gum. This is a distraction to what you are trying to say.
  6. Do not interrupt the interviewer.
