The United States Navy Band will be making a stop at Charleston Southern University on Thursday, Feb. 27 as part of the band’s 2020 tour. The performing ensembles will be the Concert Band, Sea Chanters chorus and Cruisers popular music group. The band, with its combined ensembles, performs in many styles ranging from traditional wind band repertoire to Broadway showstoppers, rhythm and blues, pop and patriotic favorites. Touring the country in performance is one of the Navy band’s responsibilities.

The band is based in Washington, D.C. and specific regions of the U.S. are chosen so that people who don’t regularly have the opportunity to witness the Navy Band might get the chance to hear their music. Events performed by the band are family friendly and are meant to be entertaining to veterans, families, those interested in joining the Navy, and anyone who enjoys live music.

As the original ensemble of the Navy Band, the Concert Band has been performing public concerts and participating in high-profile events for more than 95 years.

“For many years, Navy bands have been where it matters, when it matters, just like the rest of our Navy,” U.S. Navy Band commanding officer Capt. Kenneth Collins said. “Today, we have Sailors performing around the world, improving relations with our allies abroad as well as telling the Navy story here at home.”

Ensembles from the Navy Band tour nationally 12-15 weeks each year, and sailors in the Navy Band are full-time professional musicians who are enlisted in the U.S. Navy. Nearly all have undergraduate degrees in music, and most have graduate degrees.

The concert is free and open to the community. Seating is limited, so reserve tickets early here.
