Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)

The traditional Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree at Charleston Southern University is designed as a four-year program. The first year, referred to as pre-nursing, focuses on general education and the sciences, while the following three years dive deep into nursing and clinical experiences. Students receive experiential learning from the start, with high-fidelity manikin patient simulators in CSU labs, as well as real-life clinical experience in various hospital and community agencies in the Lowcountry.

Students may apply for the nursing program during the semester in which they successfully complete the final nursing prerequisite courses. If admitted to the nursing program, students will begin nursing coursework in the following semester. Students must be enrolled in pre-nursing for at least one semester to be eligible to apply. This is a highly competitive program, and the Charleston Southern BSN program graduates successfully pass the NCLEX-RN at a rate of 97% or greater.

The following requirements must be met to be eligible to apply for the program:

Step 1: Complete Pre-nursing

As a pre-nursing student, students will complete prerequisite coursework during their first year while working closely with their pre-nursing advisors to stay on track. The Traditional BSN pathway follows a 1year of prerequisites + 3year nursing coursework model. The BSN program at Charleston Southern University is a competitive-entry program. Admission to the university does not guarantee admission to the College of Nursing BSN program. Nursing coursework typically begins in the sophomore year, and we offer Traditional BSN admission in both the fall and spring semesters.

After acceptance to CSU and during registration, your pre-nursing advisor will begin enrolling you in prerequisite nursing courses. Meet with your nursing academic advisor at least once each semester to review academic progress and plans. Students who place into MATH-099 and/or ENGL-099 should expect to extend their time at CSU by at least one semester. Please note that admission requirements are subject to change between application cycles. Students are permitted up to two application attempts.

***Pre-Nursing prerequisites, Liberal Arts Core and NURS courses may have their own prerequisite requirements. Students should review the CSU course catalog.

For transfer credit consideration, please refer to Transfer Credit | CSU. All transfer credits must have been awarded a grade of C or higher for College of Nursing credit.

Students applying for fall admission may be accepted with the contingency of completing up to four prerequisite courses during the summer. All prerequisite courses must be completed by the beginning of the fall semester with a “C” or better, while maintaining a minimum prerequisite GPA of 2.90. Contingent admission is designed to allow a student to take a course that has not previously been attempted. An attempt is defined as enrollment in a course with a resulting grade of W, AW, FA, F, D or higher. The student’s GPA must be at or above the minimum 2.90 prior to starting summer contingent courses.

Step 2: Apply to the Nursing Program

Prepare your application for admission into CSU’s nursing program and submit by the published fall or spring cohort application deadlines. The BSN program at CSU is a competitive-entry program and admission to the university does not guarantee admission to the nursing program.

Step 3: Acceptance to the Nursing Program

Midterm Acceptance Policy:  Acceptance to the nursing program typically occurs after final grades are posted.  Students who maintain at least a 3.50 nursing prerequisite GPA and earn a midterm grade of “B” or better in their in-progress prerequisites will be offered a provisional acceptance into the program. For students applying to a fall cohort, students with contingent courses will not be considered for midterm acceptance.

Admitted students will be enrolled in 200 level nursing courses in their first semester. Upon admission into the Nursing Program at Charleston Southern University, the student will receive (via email) a compliance checklist. All components of the checklist must be completed and uploaded properly by the date indicated in the email. Failure to complete and upload this checklist by the due date will result in the student being removed from their nursing courses.  An alternate applicant will be notified and enrolled.
