What can you do with an English degree?
English Degree Careers English is more than just a degree. Rather, it sets you up for success. English teaches you more...
From the tiniest cell to the largest ecosystem on Earth, biology is the science that helps us understand life. Getting a degree in biology is one of the most flexible paths students can choose.
Since biology touches nearly every aspect of life, students graduating with a bachelor’s in biology have the opportunity to work in a lot of different careers. The biology program at Charleston Southern University offers a large number of classes that cover almost every part of biology, like plants, animals, humans, microbes, and the environment.
There are four emphases of biology degrees that CSU offers. General Biology is designed for students who plan to seek employment after graduating. Medical Laboratory Science is designed to train medical laboratory scientists to take the MLS certification exam. Preprofessional emphasis allows students to strengthen their critical thinking skills, as well as apply for grants and publish their findings at professional society meetings. Wildlife Biology prepares students to apply for certification with the wildlife society.
More than what most people might think.
A biological technician is the scientist’s right hand. They assist biological or medical scientists by preparing tests, operating equipment, conducting experiments, and recording data. They work in various places like in a lab, office, or the field.
Environmental scientists study the interactions between Earth’s natural systems and human activities. They protect nature and human health. They collect and analyze samples of soil, air, and water to identify any pollutants and assess any public health risks. Afterward, they come up with a plan to prevent and clean up environmental damage.
Food or agricultural scientists research ways to improve the food system. They work in locations like labs, offices, or in the field. They test food by studying the science of the food supply. The goal is to improve the efficiency, quality and safety of food, and to create new and nutritious food products.
A forensic science technician helps solve crimes by collecting and analyzing physical evidence. They aid criminal investigators as the scientific backbone of the operation.
A medical laboratory technician or technologist analyzes patient samples like blood, tissue, or fluid samples to help doctors diagnose and treat disease. They work with doctors to provide the data needed to monitor illnesses like cancer, diabetes, and infections. They maintain strict quality control and log accurate data so doctors and physicians can make informed and correct medical decisions.
A quality control analyst tests, inspects and analyzes products and materials to make sure they are safe and work correctly. They make sure that the products meet the safety, design and regulatory standards. Quality control analysts work in places like factories, labs, and tech offices.
A pharmaceutical sales representative is the bridge between drug manufacturers and healthcare providers. They visit doctors, clinics, pharmacists, and hospitals to educate them on new prescription medication as well as try to convince them to use the medications for their patients.
CSU offers a Master of Science in biology. It is a one-year program that does not require a thesis. It provides a more advanced understanding of biological theory, lab techniques and experimental design.
A degree in biology opens the door to a lot more than one would realize. A biology degree provides students the knowledge and skills to make a big impact in their careers. As science continues to grow and as new information is revealed, the demand for careers in biology will grow.
Students will take classes such as Foundations of Biology, Microbiology, Zoology, Ecology, Genetics, Botany, and more.
