Bachelor of Arts (BA), Musical Theatre

Students in the Musical Theatre degree will gain a strong background in theatre and onstage experience including studies in voice, dance and other music courses. As a student of theatre at CSU, you will have the opportunity to prepare roles for or work on a minimum of two main stage productions a year in CSU’s Lightsey Chapel Auditorium. Students also have the chance to perform, direct, or work on smaller productions in our Black Box Theatre. Students will receive weekly voice lessons to hone their vocal technique and expand their understanding of a wide range of vocal repertoire. Personal attention in the classroom and practical experience through the production process will support your growth as a performer.

At CSU, all music majors receive individual attention from outstanding and well-credentialed faculty who are active performers in the community and region. CSU’s mission and vision as a Christian institution of higher learning provides students the opportunity to study and understand their discipline from a Christian perspective and guides each student to develop their musical potential to its fullest.

Charleston Southern University’s accreditation can be found here.

Students will learn how to be excellent performers but also gain valuable understanding and appreciation for many other facets of theatre through hands-on experience and immersion in the production process. Additionally, the experienced musical theatre faculty approach and evaluate each student’s unique skills and gifts in order to direct them toward their greatest strengths while helping them grow through their challenges.

Theatre students have access to two impressive performance spaces: the 1,500-seat Lightsey Chapel theatre, equipped with a 30 line set fly system and state-of-the-art audio technology for large-scale productions, and the intimate 60-seat Black Box theatre in the music wing, perfect for close-up theatrical experiences. These diverse venues provide students with professional-quality facilities to develop their craft across various performance styles.

Students completing the Bachelor of Arts in Musical Theatre will be prepared for auditions at local and regional theatre companies, including Charleston Stage Company. Additional job and audition opportunities may include performer jobs in theme parks or on cruise ships. Jobs in the area include teaching with local musical theatre centers, schools, and other theatre and arts organizations.
