55th Annual Academic and Student Life Awards

By Jenna Johnson | April 29, 2020

The 55th Annual Academic and Student Life Awards was a bit different this year. As much of the world is doing during the pandemic, Charleston Southern University committed to social distancing last month which meant pushing everything online. Spring events were canceled or modified to a virtual platform – that includes this year’s awards day.

Dr. Jackie Fish, vice president for academic affairs, said that this event is one of the proudest and happiest days at CSU recognizing the academic excellence and achievements of our students. “We are here on campus, but not with the normal 1,700 smiling faces of our students and proud parents who usually join us at this celebration. We miss you,” Fish said.

In a brief address to the CSU family, President Dondi E. Costin shared his pride of the campus community’s response to an unprecedented, historic moment in our world. “Through all of this we have proclaimed the phrase that has become second nature to us now based on Psalm 46, and that’s ‘Don’t Fear, Buccaneer,’” he said. “Today we will continue as we would have if you were on campus.”

More than 60 awards were presented for each discipline and college, as well as for CSU Women’s Council Scholarships, Myrtle E. Hamrick Award, Excellence in Teaching Award, student organizations, faculty and staff service pins, retirements, and honor societies.
