What can you do with a computer science degree?

In a world where technology continues to shape how one lives, a computer science degree is needed in many different types of careers. Earning a Bachelor of Science in computer science is more than just coding. Students gain skills like problem solving, and analytical and technical skills.

Computer science is the study of computers and how they work. It uses math, logic, and ideas behind the software technology. Charleston Southern University’s computer science program is a track that teaches students the fundamentals of computer science and mathematics.
What are some careers one can do in computer science?
Software developer
A software developer uses programming and computer code to make apps and computer programs. They also make sure that websites work correctly and smoothly.
Web developer
A web developer builds websites and web apps. They plan layouts of the site, select typography, or fonts, as well as colors. Ultimately, web designers want to make a website look efficient and engaging so people would want to use it.
Cybersecurity analyst
Cybersecurity analysts act as a security guard, but digitally. They make sure systems are safe and that there are no security or data breaches and set up protection to stop hackers and to keep data safe.
Data analyst
Data analysts collect and clean messy data and numbers to help companies make smarter decisions. They fix mistakes and make it so the data for websites is easy to understand.
Systems Administrator
A systems administrator takes care of a company’s technology. They make sure that computers and data run smoothly and install hardware to help network servers stay safe and secure.
Network administrator
A network administrator’s job is to keep a company’s or organization’s network secure. They are sometimes considered the traffic controllers of a computer network.
Technology Consultant
A technology consultant helps companies or businesses figure out how to use their technology more efficiently. They help them understand the technology for businesses or companies to make smart decisions and achieve goals.
Game Designer
Game designers develop and design video games. They get to design how the game works and how it is supposed to be played. Their goal is to make a video game engaging and fun to play.
IT analyst
An IT analyst designs IT systems. They are the gap between technology and businesses. They design solutions to help businesses’ current digital system work better and ensure it aligns with the company’s goals.
Graduate School
CSU offers a Master of Science in computer science. It can be done part- or full-time with a total of 30 credit hours. The goal of the degree is to help students understand the technical fundamentals of computer science, like databases, networking, and software engineering. Students in this program would take classes like advanced network security, distributed database systems, advanced algorithms, and more.
Where will your computer science degree take you?
Getting a degree in computer science opens many doors to great and rewarding careers. As technology continues to grow, there will be a lot more demand for people who understand technology and how to improve it.
