What can you do with a math degree?

It is a common misconception that math is useless in the real world, unless you are a math teacher or professor. However, there are many professions where one uses math. Math is the study of numbers, shapes, structures, and patterns. It is a universal language used to solve problems and make logical connections.

Whether your interests are in theoretical concepts or real-world applications, a degree in math is a solid foundation to do great in fields that need precision, creativity, and critical thinking. In today’s world, math graduates are highly sought after because they learn strict problem solving, abstract thinking, and data analysis. Instead of just teaching random memorization, a math major proves to employers that a candidate can build logical, practical solutions by breaking down complex problems.

Here are some careers one can do with a degree in math

BUSINESS:

Having a career in business is a great career for math majors because of their knowledge in quantitative reasoning, problem solving, and data interpretation.

Data Analyst

Data analysts collect, clean, and interpret data sets to solve problems, answer questions, and identify analytics for employers. In this type of career, one starts with identifying the data they need to analyze, then collecting it. After that, they clean the data to get it prepared for the analysis. Then they analyze the data and interpret the results. This career is great for math majors because they excel in statistical analysis, quantitative reasoning, and data interpretation, which are core skills for analyzing data.

Actuary

An actuary is someone who predicts the future. They use math, statistics, and financial theory to assess the risk of potential events as well as helping businesses develop policies to minimize the risk. They are considered risk managers who predict the likelihood of a disaster or accident. For example, they could predict the probability of something happening in the future, such as predicting weather patterns for the next year or predicting what a homeowner should pay. Their work helps businesses determine exactly what financial cost they need. This is a good fit for math graduates because they can use their skills in probability and statistics to evaluate these risks with some accuracy.

Banker

A career in banking involves managing money, providing financial service to customers, and simplifying transactions. There are different types of jobs one can get in banking, such as a bank teller, personal banker, financial advisor, or branch manager. This career uses a lot of problem solving and analytical skills, which is exactly what math majors excel at.

TECHNOLOGY:

Working in technology is also a great career for math majors because of their strong logical reasoning, algorithmic thinking, as well as great problem-solving skills. Many careers in technology involve interpreting complicated data, optimizing systems, or building mathematical models that might be required for different types of modern technology.

Data Scientists

A data scientist is someone who uses data to help solve problems. They look at messy information, clean it up, and find possible hidden patterns to help companies solve problems. Essentially, they take messy information and turn it into cleaner information that is easier to understand.

Software Developer

A software developer uses code to write instructions for technology to work. They design how an app or program will look, build the actual code, check for bugs or mistakes, and then maintain it after the program is finished.

AI Engineering

An AI engineer is someone who builds smart systems. They design and implement algorithms that help artificial intelligence to learn, process natural language, and recognize images. They do that by collecting raw data and organizing it, then they write mathematical algorithms and train the AI on the data. This would be good for math majors because they understand how an algorithm works, and it would give them a great advantage when writing the math.

Cryptographers

A cryptographer uses math to create codes and algorithms to scramble information. This ensures that data, such as messages, credit card numbers, etc., can only be read by the actual person, not by anyone else. They are considered the locksmiths of the digital world.

EDUCATION:

You don’t have to become a math teacher to work in education. There are many types of jobs one can do in education.

Data Analysts

Just like in business, a data analyst collects and interprets data, this time in education. They use the data to improve student outcomes and optimize school operations. They use models and tools to turn collected information into simpler insights that will help teachers and administrators understand more, which helps them make more informative and insightful decisions.

Instructional design

Someone who works in Instructional design creates, organizes, and evaluates learning experiences. They usually work with teachers to make academic work into engaging, effective curricula. They design lesson plans, student guides, and teaching manuals that align with the education standards. For math majors, they could design math lesson or assessments.

Educational Consultant

An educational consultant is an advisor who helps students, families, and schools navigate the learning landscape, maximize curriculum, and improve academic outcomes. For math majors, they can advise schools or districts on different mathematical methods, as well as learning standards and implementing material.

Teacher/Professor

There is always a need for math teachers or professors. While you will need some additional certifications to teach, math teachers are in high demand around the country. Some states offer alternative certification pathways which lets you teach while completing the other requirements.

A degree in math offers far more than what one thinks. It is a flexible skill set that’s highly valued across companies and businesses. Employers seek math graduates for their ability to think critically, solve problems methodically and approach challenges with precision and creativity. Students majoring in math at CSU take classes such as Calculus I, II, and III, Abstract Algebra, Linear Algebra, Statistics, Number Theory, and more.
