How will CSU help me adjust to campus life?
At CSU, we want you to feel at home! We start with our three-day international orientation, where you will:
- Meet other international students,
- Learn about the American classroom culture and American culture in society
- Tour the CSU campus, the neighboring businesses, resources like the Writing Center and Math labs, and tour the beautiful historic city of Charleston
- Have lots of fun! Kayaking, bowling, and games help students get to know each other.
In your first semester, there are two special classes just for international freshmen:
- American Cultural Intelligence GNED 110. Open to all new international students as CSU, American Cultural Intelligence class is a 3-hour course that helps orient students to US academic culture, cross-cultural communication, and the Christian worldview of CSU. Students explore these topics through activities, readings, and discussion. For international students, this class substitutes for 3 hours of World Languages.
- ENGL 121 and 122 – Freshman English for Speakers of Other Languages. This freshman English course is required for all students, but international students are in a section together so that everyone feels free to ask questions and seek help.
Our International Club is available for all students and meets regularly planning events throughout the year. We carve pumpkins in the Fall, decorate cookies for Christmas and plan special outings. We also have opportunities for you to have an American exchange family and a Peer Buddy – an American student mentor.
