Dropping or withdrawing from a class? Here is what you need to know before you hit submit.

Before you make a decision, learn more on how dropping/withdrawing from a course/s can affect your financial aid and satisfactory academic progress (SAP).

Dropping

If deciding to drop registered courses during or before the drop/ add period, your financial aid will be adjusted based on the hours remaining at the end of the drop/add period.

Review your scholarships and grants eligibility requirements here. We encourage you to meet with a financial aid counselor and academic advisor before officially withdrawing from any courses.

  • If less than full-time enrollment, you may be ineligible for any financial aid or CSU merit scholarships.
    • Undergraduate half-time enrollment: 6 credit hours
    • Graduate half-time enrollment: 3 credit hours

Visit the Academic Calendar to know when drop/add is for a specific semester or session and refund information.

    1. Go to MyCSU account
    2. Click on Academics and select Course Search.

*Note: Withdrawing may affect your Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP). All CSU students must meet the requirements to receive any financial aid.

Go to CSU Registration for more information.

Withdrawing

Partial Withdrawal

After the drop/add period, you can only withdraw from your registered courses. This means that your financial aid will be adjusted/prorated based on the hours remaining upon class withdrawal.

Review your scholarships and grants eligibility requirements here. We encourage you to meet with a financial aid counselor before officially withdrawing from any courses.

  • Withdrawing may result in a “W” on your student transcript and can potentially compromise your ability to make SAP.
  • If less than full-time enrollment, you may not be eligible for any financial aid or merit scholarships.
    • Undergraduate half-time enrollment: 6 credit hours
    • Graduate half-time enrollment: 3 credit hours

Visit the Academic Calendar to know when drop/add ends for a specific semester or session and the last day to receive a full tuition refund.

Total Withdrawal from CSU

If transferring or no longer attending CSU, any financial aid awarded will be prorated based on your official withdrawal date and last date of attendance established by the Office of the Registrar. After completing the official withdrawal form, your financial aid will be subject to the Return of Title IV calculations. If you withdraw on or before the 60% point in time of the semester, you may owe a balance for the unearned federal aid.

Title IV Programs that are subject to return (in order):

  • Unsubsidized Federal Stafford loans
  • Subsidized Federal Stafford loans
  • Federal Grad PLUS loans
  • Federal PLUS loans
  • Federal Pell Grants
  • Federal SEOG
  • Federal TEACH Grants
  • Iraq Afghanistan Service Grant

Visit the Academic Calendar to know when drop/add ends for a specific semester or session. We encourage you to meet with a financial aid and academic counselor before officially withdrawing.

Note: If you stop attending, this is known as an unofficial withdrawal, which may result in the Return of Title IV calculation.
