Student Accounts

• 1098-Ts are produced by an outside 3^rd-party company – Heartland/ECSI – and mailed by the 31^st of January each year.
• They are mailed to the student’s permanent address on file with the university.
• 1098-Ts can also be accessed online: https://heartland.ecsi.net/ and students will need:
  • First and Last Name
  • Social Security Number
  • Zip Code that appears on their 1098T form
• If you have questions regarding your 1098-T please call: Heartland ECSI at 1-866-428-1098.

• The 1098-T is for informational purposes. CSU cannot provide tax advice or directions on how to utilize your 1098-T. If you have questions regarding whether you need to file this form, please contact your local tax preparer.

• Refunds are anticipated to begin 3-5 weeks into each semester if a credit balance exists on the account.
• E-Refunds are issued first, so please sign up for e-Refunds.
  • Log into MyCSU
  • Select the Student Tab across the top
  • Select Payments, e-bills, e-refund, My Payment Plan link
  • Select “Sign up for direct deposit refunds!” in the middle of the page
  • Follow prompts to complete enrollment
• Refunds are processed in a random order, and your account will not become eligible for processing until a credit balance is created on your account.
• Through My Account History in MyCSU you can see the details of your account.
  • Log into MyCSU
  • Select the Student Tab across the top
  • Select Financial from the left-hand menu
  • Select My Account History
  • If you have a zero balance – click on the balance for your detail
  • A/R refund should be the first transaction
  • The transaction date associated with A/R refund is when you should expect your refund. eRefunds may be credited to your bank account up to three days later depending on bank processing time.

• If you have a credit balance – negative balance – your account is eligible for a refund and it should be processed within 14 days.
• If you have a debit balance – positive balance – you currently have a balance with the university.
  • This balance needs to be paid out of pocket to clear any holds on your account or all your aid has not been posted to your account

• Check your Financial Aid online to see if you are missing any documents.
• Once all your aid posts to your account, giving you a credit (negative) balance, your account is eligible for a refund and it will be processed within 14 days.
• Students not enrolled in e-refund (direct deposit) will receive their check via Paymerang sent directly to their CSU BucMail email account. You will need to follow the prompts in the email to download and print your refund check to deposit at your banking institution.

MyPayment Plan

• Payment is due by the first day of class.
• The convenient My Payment Plan is highly encourage for students who are unable to pay the balance by the first day of class.
• Payment plans are offered for all semesters of each academic year and must be set up each semester.
• The enrollment fee of $45/semester is due at the time of enrollment.
• Payment plans do not accrue interest on the account and keep your account in good standing as long as payments are current.
• There is a 4- or 5-month plan available each semester (depending on the start date).
  • PLEASE NOTE: Payment plan does not override any due date for student graduation, including balance holds.  Check with the registrar’s office to determine when account balances must be cleared as the date may be BEFORE the last payment plan due date.
• All payment plan balances are due by the end of the semester you are enrolled and cannot be rolled into the next semester.
• Payment plans are not available after October 15 for fall, March 15 for spring, or July 15 for summer.
• All payments are due the 15th of each month, with a $30 late fee assessed after the 20th.
• Balances are imported directly from your student account and cannot be adjusted by the user. Changes in financial aid or charges will adjust your payment plan balance and payments automatically.
• Work-study awards cannot be deducted from payment plan balances up-front, but instead will reduce your balance as your paychecks are applied to your account.  Work-study students must submit the enrollment form to have checks applied to the account.

• Select view payment plan options.
• Select appropriate payment plan and follow prompts to complete enrollment.
• Parents log in through the “Go to Higher One” link on the Student page in MyCSU.

• Select Make a Payment.
• Use the My Payment Plan (MPP) option. This will credit your plan accurately and prevent late fees from applying. Payments made outside of this will not apply to your payment plan.

EBills

• Electronic billing is the easy way to keep track of your bills. CSU will notify you by email that a bill is available online.
• To access your ebill:
  • Log into your MyCSU account.
  • Select Student tab.

• • Select Payments, ebills, eRefund, MyPayment Plan.
  • Select Statements.
  • Select “View” by the newest eBill.

eRefund Signup

• CSU utilizes eRefunds for processing refunds to students. Sign up early to ensure your refund is issued as soon as your money becomes available.
• ERefunds are processed first and are the fastest way to receive your refund.

Tuition Appeal

Understanding that extraordinary circumstances arise on rare occasions, which may preclude a student from completing an academic term or course. CSU offers insurance through GradGuard. It is encouraged to enroll each semester to protect your educational financial investment. The university offers tuition appeals only. There is a Tuition Appeals Committee to evaluate appeals. This committee may waive the refund rules as stated in the catalog, and or adjust tuition charges. Appeals for room & board, books, fees and dining dollars are not eligible. All tuition appeal evaluations are on a case-by-case basis. The committee meets once a month and will review appeals received five business days prior to the meeting. Appeals received within four business days, or less, reviews on the next month’s meeting. Appeal decisions are final and mailed to the student. To process an appeal, visit MyCSU.

To be eligible for consideration, applicants must complete each of the steps as indicated below:

• Officially withdraw from all classes which you are appealing. This process is completed online through your MyCSU account.
• Complete a Tuition Appeal form and return to the Student Accounts office along with any other required supporting documentation, as outlined in the guidelines.

Rules:

In some appeal situations a balance is created from a previously distributed refund check or book charges or other nonreimbursable item. If a balance is created, it must be paid in full prior to registering for future semesters or receiving a transcript.

GradGuard Tuition Insurance:

Another option is GradGuard Tuition Insurance.

• Each semester through the drop/add period, insurance is offered as a means to protect the financial investment of attending the university.
• Coverage for serious injury or illness, chronic Illness and mental health conditions are included.
• Cost: 1.25% for every $10,000 of coverage, which translates to $125.

CSU has instituted a new system for students to receive their bills and refunds. These two services will now be available exclusively online. eBill is available on MyCSU, the one-stop shop for students to view their Schedules, Financial Aid Online, Student Accounts Online, eBill, New Student Orientation, BucMail, Blackboard, etc.

To view eBill and sign up (Students):

• Log into your MyCSU account
• Select the Student tab
• Select Payments, ebills, erefunds, MyPayment Plan link
• Select Statements on the left side of page
• Click “View” next to the newest ebill.
• To allow someone access to your account, select the “Send a payer invitation” After clicking the Payments, ebills, erefunds, MyPayment Plan link on the student tab of MyCSU.  Follow the prompts to complete.

Your first billing statement of each semester shows the expected charges for the upcoming semester. This is based on your current registration at the time of the statement and includes tuition and lab fees, if you are enrolled for a lab class. It also includes room and board charges, if you live on-campus. Your billing statement also lists your financial aid for the semester that will be applied to the above charges. Please note that your billing statement only covers one semester. You will receive a billing statement for the following semester before the start of that semester. **If your enrollment changes before the Drop/Add Period, your charges and financial aid may be adjusted accordingly. Subsequent billing statements produced after the Drop/Add Period will include actual charges and financial aid.

If you will owe a balance after your financial aid is applied, your balance will need to be paid by the first day of classes (please refer to the academic calendar for the specific date).

If you have been awarded Federal College Work-Study, you will not see the funds listed on your first billing statement. However, you may choose to have the funds applied to your account on a monthly basis as you work the required hours during the semester. If you are awarded CWSP, expect to earn approximately $940 per semester (after taxes) if you work all of the hours for which you are expected. If you would like your CWSP funds to be applied directly to your account, you must complete the release form from the CSU Student Employment Office. If you so choose, these earnings will be reflected on your subsequent billing statements as they are paid.

If you have been awarded a Subsidized Stafford Loan or an Unsubsidized Stafford Loan, the loan will be listed on your first billing statement as a tentative item. However, if you have not completed the required entrance counseling or have not signed your master promissory note, the loan will not be disbursed to your account until you do so.

Subsequent billing statements will reflect actual receipt of loan funds from your chosen Lender as they occur.

Any approved alternative loans for which you have been approved will not be listed on your first billing statement. If your alternative loan has been added to your awards as shown at https://financialaid.csuniv.edu/netparnerstudent, calculate the loan amount into your financial aid. Your loan will be applied to your account upon receipt of these funds from your Lender and will be shown on your billing statement at that time.

If no financial aid is listed on your billing statement, please check CSU Financial Aid online to make sure your financial aid file is complete.

Even though your financial aid is listed on your first billing statement, your aid may not disburse if you need to submit additional required documentation.

Find out if your processed FAFSA has been received; if you’ve submitted all required documents; and best of all, your CSU financial aid award. Any updates or revisions to your awards can be viewed here as well. Use your CSU ID and PIN to access online at https://financialaid.csuniv.edu/netpartnerstudent

If your financial aid is greater than your expected charges, you will be issued a refund check from the Student Accounts Office approximately two weeks after end of the Drop/Add Period. Please view your account online at MyCSU to determine when your refund check is available.

Note: If you have a prior balance, you will need to make payment in full to the CSU Student Accounts Office prior to the start of the semester.

There are several options to cover any remaining balance including the My Payment Plan, alternative loans, or a payment on your account.

Enrolling in My Payment Plan allows you to divide the balance owed (if any) into 4 or 5 monthly installments. For more information, visit the Online Payments, E-bills and Erefund tab on the Student Accounts page or contact CSU Student Accounts Office via email or phone. An enrollment fee is required for each semester. Please note that this is the only monthly payment plan that is accepted by the university.

PLUS (Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students) is a loan in the parent’s name. The PLUS has a variable interest rate. This loan goes into repayment 60 days after the loan is disbursed. The amount of repayment depends on the total borrowed. For example, minimum repayment on a $4,000 loan is $50 per month. There are no prepayment penalties. There is a loan application and approval process. If parents are determined to be ineligible for a PLUS Loan, students may be eligible to receive additional Unsubsidized Stafford Loan. The loan amount would be dependent on the student’s academic class status. The PLUS Prequalification Form will determine your initial eligibility prior to completing the PLUS Master Promissory Note. Credit balances created due to a Parent Plus loan will be refunded according to the choice indicated on the application, either Borrower or Student.  Refunds issued to the Borrower will be mailed.

Alternative Student Loans

Palmetto Assistance Loan (PAL) and/or CitiAssist Loan are available to degree-seeking students who need additional funds to meet the Cost of Attendance. They are only awarded after the student has received a Stafford loan. Students applying for an alternative loan may borrow up to the total budget for the current academic year. These loans are in the student’s name and approved based on the borrower’s credit and work history. A co-signer may be required when applying for an alternative loan. The interest rates on these loans are variable and most of them go into repayment six months after graduation, withdrawal from CSU, or when a student drops below half-time status.

Once you have registered for classes, the Student Accounts Office also accepts payments online at charlestonsouthern.edu.

Students are automatically awarded to their maximum loan eligibility. Stafford loan eligibility is based on hours earned and the student’s classification as a freshman, sophomore, junior or senior. For more information on the maximum loan requirements, check the S. C. Loan Corporation web site at scstudentloan.org.

Each lender has their maximum loan limits (not to exceed the student’s cost of attendance) and criteria for increasing loans. Students should contact their lender directly for more information.

If you were awarded Federal College Work-Study (FCWS), this will not be listed in the financial aid awards on your statement. FCWS must be earned each month by working the required number of hours. This is taxable income; therefore, your net earning will be approximately 94% of your total award. Before you may begin your FCWS position, you are required to complete a Student Employment Contract, which you will receive at the Student Employment Office. You will be given an option to automatically apply your paycheck to your balance. If you choose this option and work your required hours, you may subtract 94% of the FCWS award from the balance shown on your statement. Otherwise, full payment of your remaining balance for the semester is required. Other financial aid awards may not be on your statement due to missing documents needed to complete your financial aid file. These documents are required to confirm your award and disburse the award to your student account. Follow-up letters for these missing documents are sent out bimonthly. It is important to submit this information no later than 30 days after the start of classes to prevent losing your award, if applicable.

If you have a credit balance – negative balance – your account is eligible for a refund and it should be processed within 14 days.  No refunds will be disbursed until a credit exists on your account. Even if you have been approved for a loan, a refund cannot be processed until we receive the funds from the loan corporation. The fastest way to receive a refund it to sign up for erefund which will deposit the funds directly into your account:

No, your loan money will be disbursed accordingly at the beginning of each term. No exceptions will be made.

Work-study students must work the required hours before receiving any refund check. The purpose of the work-study program is to help pay for your tuition. The majority of students automatically apply their work-study checks to their account. Your work-study wage is taxable. That means if you are awarded $1000.00 as a work-study award, after taxes are removed, your award will be around $940.00, please take this into consideration. Once you have worked your required hours and your work-study check produces a credit balance on your account, you may be eligible for a refund.

The Student Accounts office strives to process refunds as quickly as possible, and therefore special requests are not granted.

Your financial aid package is dependent on the amount of hours you are registered for. If you were awarded based on a full-time schedule and you drop down to six hours, you will no longer qualify for full-time financial aid. All awards, loans and charges will be adjusted if appropriate.

All payments are due on the first day of class of each term. If you don’t know how much you owe, please go to the Charleston Southern University website to view the current tuition charges for that term.
